Now in its 25th year, the annual Small Works on Paper exhibition showcases artwork no larger than 24 x 24
inches by Arkansas artists who are members of the Arkansas Artist Registry, an online art gallery
coordinated by the Arts Council. The selected work is chosen by an out-of-state juror, who also selects
pieces for purchase awards. Purchase award winners receive the cash amount equivalent to the value of
their selected works. Funded by entry fees, the purchase award pieces become part of the exhibition's
permanent collection.
The art will be on display in 10 galleries throughout the state in a year-long touring show. The 2012 show
features 40 works, which were selected from 246 submissions by juror Marcia Goldenstein. Goldenstein is
a professor of drawing and painting at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and holds a Master of Fine
Arts degree in painting from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. She has been a visiting artist at
numerous institutions around the world and her paintings have appeared in many solo and invitational
exhibitions in the United States, Europe and China and are included in a variety of museum, corporate and
private collections.
"When I agreed to jury the 2012 Small Works on Paper traveling exhibition I never imagined how difficult it
was going to be to select 40 works from a total of 246," said Goldenstein. "Especially noteworthy for me
were the categories of photography and drawing. The range from new technologies (phone cameras) to
domestic (stitchery) presented a wonderful variety of media and image making. I believe that this exhibition
reveals the best of the rich variety of materials and ideas."
Six artists were selected to receive purchase awards totaling nearly $2,000: William Barksdale of Cotter;
Ginger Grahn of Paragould; Neal Harrington of Russellville; Dennis McCann of Maumelle; Jason McCann of
Maumelle; and Mike Means of El Dorado.
